The Gospel of Christ: About Him or His Message?
The phrase “gospel of Christ” appears ten times in the Bible, while a search for the phrase “gospel about Christ” yields no results. This distinction is crucial. The verses where “gospel of Christ” is found are:
Romans 1:15
Romans 15:19
Romans 15:29
1 Corinthians 9:12
1 Corinthians 9:18
2 Corinthians 9:13
2 Corinthians 10:14
Galatians 1:7
Philippians 1:27
1 Thessalonians 3:7
All of these passages come from the writings of the Apostle Paul, who consistently emphasized the true nature of the message entrusted to him.
Importantly, the gospel of Christ does not mean a message merely about Him, such as recounting details of His life, birth, or death. Rather, it refers to the Good News that Christ Himself proclaimed and embodied. The word “gospel” literally means good news, and the heart of that good news is what Yahshua (popularly known as Jesus) pointed to again and again—the coming Kingdom of God on earth.
This is a vital distinction. In Scripture, the focus of the gospel is not placed solely on Christ’s biography or even His sacrifice, but on the message of God’s Kingdom—the hope, restoration, and future that He came to announce and make possible. His life, death, and resurrection give authority and power to that message, but the essence of the gospel of Christ is the announcement of God’s reign breaking into the world, bringing redemption and the promise of eternal life for those who faithful to the end,
